Using a PDA

You can access the application using a Pocket PC PDA. The following devices are supported:

  • Pocket PC 2003
  • Windows Mobile 5.0

The Pocket PC version is a specially written 'mini' version that connects directly to the web server. It uses the inbuilt internet connection provided by GPRS Wireless LAN, GPRS, 3G, Bluetooth etc. to keep you up to date anywhere, anytime. All data transferred is compressed and encrypted and kept to a minimum, so it's fast, safe and cost effective.

How it works

You use the same user logon that you have set up for Desktop / Web Browser access. However, before the user logon can be used for PDA access the user must be edited by the User Administrator to allow that user to have PDA access (PDA Enabled checkbox in User Details window).

In order to run the software on the PDA you must download and install the Pocket PC Application.

The PDA works just like the Desktop version. Data entered will be updated to the server immediately if an internet connection is established. If an internet connection is not open then any work will be saved on the PDA and updated the next time a connection is made. The data can also be refreshed manually at specified intervals (auto refresh) to keep the data server and the PDA in line.

How to set up a PDA user

  • Click the Tools menu and select User Admin.

  • To add a new user click the New button and add the user. Ensure that the 'PDA Enabled' checkbox is ticked.

  • To give an existing user PDA capability, edit the user and ensure that the 'PDA Enabled' checkbox is ticked.

  • Click the Ok button.

How to set up Email for a PDA user

  • Click the Tools menu and select Email Accounts.

  • Select the email account to be accessed via PDA and click the Edit button.

  • Click the Server Managed tab.

  • Tick the 'Server Managed' checkbox.

  • Click the Ok button.

This changes the method used to receive emails. With 'Server Managed', a background server process periodically checks for emails and receives them to the database server. When you log on the emails are displayed immediately. i.e. You don't have to wait for emails to be received.
